RULES
Don't be a dick.
There's a reason this game is private. It's meant to be a fun, safe space. Be respectful to one another. If you're having an issue with another player and you can't resolve it on your own, please let me know and I'll see what I can do to mediate.
Please include proper warnings on applicable posts and use cut tags as necessary. You wouldn't want to be blindsided by a trigger when checking the comm for activity, so don't do it to others. In a similar vein, always, always ask the other player you're tagging before integrating a kink into your log. It's rude and off-putting to just throw kinks into a smut log without communicating with your writing partner.
No godmodding/infomodding.
I'm going to go ahead and assume we all know what these terms mean. If you're not sure, ask me. Don't do these things. They're obnoxious at best and really rude and disrespectful at worst. No one likes players who do this, so don't be that guy. I'll kick you out if it becomes a repeat issue.
If you feel you're being god/info-modded, please let me know and I will discuss with the player in question.
Be considerate when inviting new players.
Again, there's a reason this game is private. Please take into account other players before you invite new ones in. For example, if Jan has been playing here already and you want to invite Marcia, but you're aware of the fact that Marcia and Jan don't get along...don't invite Marcia until you talk to Jan first. Jan, please be fair about it - if you can exist in the same space civilly, then give a green light. If you think it's going to cause undue amounts of drama, then let me know you'd prefer a mediation before I accept Marcia in.
Another example would be if Jan is playing Hermione Granger, you might want to make sure she's aware of the fact that you're planning on inviting Cindy, who plays Ron Weasley, since those characters are romantically involved in canon. Likewise, let Cindy know that Jan is playing Hermione. That way, there are no unpleasant surprises. Neither Jan nor Cindy will be obligated to play with one another just because of those canon ties, but it's nice for them to be aware of one another before Cindy comes into the game.
No ship/kink pushing or ic/ooc blur.
Please do not guilt, pester, or harass other players to fulfill a ship or kink request. Ask once, and if they decline, leave it at that. If they play your character's significant other in canon and they decline, well...your character is going to need to move on and so are you. Sorry about your luck.
If you can't get along with another player OOC, then please simply avoid playing with them IC. If that would be ooc for your character, then figure out a reason that your character might not interact with theirs or ask me for help mediating the situation. Do not, under any circumstance, bully other players or have your character treat another player's character poorly in an ooc way because you don't want to play with that player/character. There are better ways to handle this.
These are ban-worthy offenses; I'm not fucking around. Don't do this. If it's reported to me and I can see it in Plurks, ooc posts, or in gameplay (via passive-aggressive narratives, aggressive dialog; whatever), I will give you the boot and I'm not kidding. Just don't do it.
Characters, activity check, and caps.
This game allows canon characters, original characters, and CRAU characters.
Original characters may be fandom OCs, but they may not have any relation nor familiarity to a canon character without that character's player's permission and yes, I will be asking them. If you want to app a random hunter from East Bumblefuck, Wyoming from the Supernatural fandom without having to get permission from another player, that's totally cool, so long as they've never met the Winchesters, Cas, or anyone else who exists in the canon. It's fine if, in this example, they've heard of the Winchesters, as it's canon that the Winchesters are pretty legendary, but they cannot have met them nor can they be any distant relation unless permission is granted from those characters' players.
Any CRAU needs to be respected by canon castmates, even if that means the CRAU character has never met or has lost their memories of the rest of the cast. No bullying or harassing regarding this point. If you feel bullied or harassed about your CRAU, please let me know. It's not okay and it can be a ban-worthy offense if it becomes an issue.
Canon characters can come from any point in their canon. You may play no more than three characters from a single canon and none of them should be in any way closely linked in that canon. If Characters A and B know each other in passing but wouldn't be likely to have significant CR, then that's fine. You cannot, however, app both Dean Winchester and Castiel; Han Solo and Luke Skywalker; Mario and Luigi. Whatever. You know your canons better than I probably will, so this is going on the honor system. Please respect that.
Players will be capped at 4 canon characters to start (this includes canon OCs), and may add more on a case by case basis per the mod. You may have (in addition or without canons on your cast) as many original characters as you like, within reason. Please make sure that you can keep up with activity across the board. We're not asking for proof of activity because we're going to be relaxed here, but...don't have seven OCs if you can only handle playing actively with one.
Activity check will be a check-in on the last day of each month and you'll have one week to drop a comment there. There will be a mod post in the ooc community, you check-in and leave a list of the characters you're keeping and which you're removing if any. That's it. If you don't check-in or if you check-in and don't list all of your characters, your affected characters will be removed, because I'll assume you've lost interest and moved on. You may have someone proxy check-in for you if you're going to be unable. Please let me know ahead of time if you plan to do this, otherwise, it won't count as having checked in.
If you're removed for missing activity check, you can re-apply in one week's time.
OOC FAQ
How many characters can I have?
As many as you can realistically handle. I'm not going to police your level of activity for each and every character, but try not to take on more than you can actually play at at least a similar-level of activity.
What's arrival like? Walk me through it.
As stated in the premise, the short of it is: You might've been sleeping, but with all likelihood, you had been going about your day as normal when suddenly, you'll feel a tugging sensation in your stomach and a dizzying feeling and poof, you find yourself in a new place, ushered into a small conference room with a handful of strangers in uniform.
They apologize for the inconvenience and welcome you to Eglaf, Florida, Earth 846.
The longer story is that characters will, after the stomach-tugging, dizzying sensation, suddenly find themselves falling out of a portal suspended a few feet off the ground. They'll be swiftly surrounded by uniformed government employees and brought in for a briefing where they'll both go over and receive a packet of information, a key to their new apartment, and a folder with a file in it that lets the character know just how much information about them the locals have (which is to say, literally everything; thanks Internet).
Finally, they'll be offered a ride to their new temporary home.
What's the real-life to game time ratio?
This game has a 1:1 ratio from real time to game time.
Are the local shops/services/big box companies/etc. still the same names as the ones in our world, or are they different?
Some of them will be the same. Some of the most recognizable names will be the same, like social media networks, online streaming services, and other large, well-known corporations. Small businesses will, however, vary. Feel free to use actual businesses found in or around Washington, DC and Laguna Beach, CA if you'd like, but you can also feel free to get creative with the names of businesses and the like in either of those places or in Eglaf, which is a metropolis in Florida on Earths 800-899 only. That's why you've probably never heard of it and your character might not have, either.
TL;DR: this is flexible but largely the big name things will be the same.
Is the setting realistic?
Generally speaking, yes. There are some slight variations in technology and geography (see above), but largely what you'd see in the real world is what you'll see on Earth 846.
What's the housing like?
You can find information on the government housing on the setting page. Other than that, feel free to use the actual cities (in Eglaf's case, use Deland, FL) as reference for housing opportunities, should the characters decide they'd like to live on their own out of the government housing.
What's the deal with powers?
As your character comes through the portal, if they do not canonically have powers, they will receive them. It's up to you as the player to decide what they get, how it works, and what its limitations are (within reason; please be careful with anything that would break the game).
Powers that fit under an umbrella like a werewolf's speed, endurance, and senses or a Jedi's force abilities will all fall under that singular umbrella, so please name that accordingly. You may have a total of three to start and may potentially cap at five in the future, depending on incentive offers over time and participation in specific events.
Characters can earn new powers over the course of the game through incentives that will pop up over time — stay tuned for more details on this later.
You may bring your character in with just their canon powers, if they have them, or you may tack on additional powers. You may not completely change the abilities that come with your character in their canon, however you may expand upon them to include additional powers other variations of their species or character type might have, so for example, if you have an elf character whose ability in canon is sensitive eyesight with which they can see things others cannot, but they don't also possess divination skills that other elves in that canon possess, you can upgrade your character to include those divination stills without having to create a new power umbrella for them. Additionally, you may choose to weaken their ability to control or wield their existing canon powers so that they essentially have to relearn them, but they won't go away completely.
INFORMATION PACKET
What's the deal with registration and how does that benefit me financially?
The government doesn't force registration of Displaced Supers specifically because it's a human rights and immigration law violation on Earth 846, but because they do wish to keep track of involuntarily illegal immigration, they try to incentivize the Displaced Supers to register by offering a $5,000 (USD) per month stipend in addition to the government housing option offered to all incoming Displaced Supers regardless of their registration state.
Failing or choosing not to register does not cause any negative consequences for you because, again, the government can't punish those involuntarily immigrating to Earth 846. That said, those who fail or choose not to register are not eligible to apply for citizenship, to join the military, or apply for a government job.
How do I communicate with other Displaced Supers?
Upon arrival, all Displaced Supers will receive a communication bracelet which projects both 2D screens and 3D holograms onto their non-dominant arms. These devices will run on an operating system not too unlike iOS's most current version. Some of the features of the bracelet include:The bracelets come in a variety of colors and each Displaced Super gets to choose their band color before they're fitted. The bracelets are all waterproof and lightweight so as not to be obtrusive for users. They can be removed, but if they're lost, they're incredibly expensive to replace, so the government has to be contacted and a formal request to remove them must be made. It's all a really obnoxious process and it's probably best it be avoided and that Displaced Supers leave the bracelets on at all times.
- Voice commands, allowing users to both read and post completely hands-free.
- Automatic language translation, which means that users can choose to turn on a setting that will automatically translate anything someone writes or verbalizes to them on the network, via text, or in person from its original language into the user's language of choice, easily eliminating language gaps.
- A mental network, giving users the ability to simulate telepathic conversations with one another by simply thinking what they wish to communicate to the other person. This comes in both public and private modes, although public mode is generally frowned upon and is toggled off by default.
What is the transportation like on Earth 846?
Since it's still the year 2020, Earth 846 isn't super ahead of most other Earths, as far as public transportation goes. There are public buses, trains, airplanes and cars. There is also a hyper-monorail reaching speeds up to 200mph that runs from Bangor, Maine to Orlando, Florida with stops in all major cities and state capitals in east coast states. The full trip from Maine to Florida takes a little over seven and a half hours.
There are teleportation devices offered, at a $1500/mo rental fee (or $15,000 to own outright) to commuters who wish to work outside their normal means of travel. For example, a person who lives in Eglaf who wishes to work in Hollywood could apply for a teleportation device and pay the fee to receive one without having to register as a Displaced Import.
Do the locals get to see our network? Is it all public or simply between newcomers?
Due to the Freedom of Information Act, American citizens can apply to gain access to specific posts, but generally, the network is specific to Displaced Supers.
How can the locals ask for access to specific posts if they don't see the network to specify them, you might ask? Bracelets from Displaced Supers before the ultimate failure of Operation Absideon were supposed to have been returned to the United States military when they were collected prior to the launch of the reactor meant to close all of the portals. ...there may have been a few leaks of bracelets, though. The government won't go into detail, but they have admitted to the fact that there are a handful of these bracelets that have not been accounted for.
Additionally, existing Displaced Supers who don't wish to keep their device can always request to have it temporarily removed by the government and then turn around and sell it to someone local for a pretty high price. The demand to get local hands on these devices is very high, but do you want the millions of dollars more than they want to be able to easily connect with other Displaced Supers? That's the real question.
Can I get a job? Will the government provide that for me, as well? What about opening my own business?
Absolutely. You will be assigned an entry level position in the field of your choice upon arrival. If you decide to take the job, show up on time on your first day and your employer will make you a full-time employee (or part-time employee, if you're under the age of 16).
As for opening your own business, if you have the capital or can get approved for a business loan from a local bank (most of them aren't likely to approve an unregistered involuntarily illegal immigrant, so you'll probably want to register before trying), then you're welcome to start your own business! In fact, it's encouraged if you remain in Eglaf and you have that inclination. They love small businesses in Eglaf!
I'm under 18. Do I have to go to school?
Yes and no. You can choose to test out of high school if you're between the ages of 14 and 17 by taking a GED test. Under the age of 14, the government requires that you either attend a public school regularly or that you request a tutor for home-schooling. Home-schooling generally takes about ten hours per week and usually runs two hours in the mornings of every weekday, but students can choose their own schedule and the government-issued tutors will happily oblige. Note that if a student chooses to be home-schooled, they will be on an accelerated course load and they will be expected to take their GED at the age of 14, so it'll be a lot of information in a very small amount of time. Choose wisely.
Are there monsters here? What about ghosts? Is there a bestiary so I can keep track?
Locally, there are only ghosts and most people don't see them. If you're naturally sensitive to that sort of thing, you're likely to see plenty of them, though. Since there are, locally, only ghosts in existence, there is no bestiary.
That said, however, there are still three open portals, one of which is the one you came through. Anyone or anything could come through that portal at any given time, so who knows what kind of crazy is potentially on its way? There's just no way to know...
Do the locals like us? Do they hate us?
Most locals tend to view the Displaced Supers as celebrities to some extent, largely because they're Supers. Locals that are interested in that sort of thing have probably learned a lot about you based on research done on adjacent Earths that has existed and been updated for decades. To them, you're a little bit more like pop culture icons than people. You might not want to look yourself up on the internet... Sorry...
That said, not everyone is as excited to meet a Super. Some of the locals are really uncomfortable with the existence of Supers on their Earth because, before the portal issues, Supers weren't a thing on Earth 846. In the experience of the locals, Supers can cause a lot of damage and some locals are still mourning the losses of loved ones in catastrophic events caused by past Supers (not the good ones, but all the same; a Super is a Super in the eyes of these folks). Your presence is unwelcome at best and triggering at worst to these people.
Then you have the folks who protest the government's huge budget going toward keeping up the housing for current Illegals and restoration efforts for damage caused by past Illegals. These are people that could potentially be dangerous to you, but you're only likely to run into them in groups, so if you're not the kind of person who is interested in being a special guest at fan or political events, you're not likely to run into them at all. Or, if you do, you might get treated rudely at the most. They're kind of cowardly since none of them are superpowered and they know that you all are.
Finally, there are the large majority of locals who are mostly indifferent, at this point, to your presence. They appreciate that you're celebrities and like to read the gossip mags to learn more about you, because you're, at the very least, interesting to them, but they probably aren't going to ask you for selfies or autographs (unless you happen to be in New York City or Los Angeles, anyway).
What's local media like?
Local media on Earth 846 is very similar to local media on any other Earth. They will pay for good stories if they have to, but they're more likely to try to get the story on their own through some diligent investigative work. Try to keep yourself out of trouble and you can avoid being on the front page of the New York Times.
Are IDs automatically pinned to the network or are we allowed to post anonymously?
By default, your ID is pinned, but you can toggle that feature off if you wish to make an anonymous post.
So, what, I have powers now? How did that happen?!
We wish we had more answers for you, but as far as we can tell, the portals also act as a conduit for this sort of thing. We have yet to gain a Displaced Super that doesn't have new powers they might not have had before coming through. We apologize for the inconvenience.
